12/17/2022 0 Comments Rise of the tomb raider![]() ![]() With so many different ways to traverse terrain, it does a great job at making her movements appear fluid and intentional. Also, a huge variety of weaponry (with dozens of upgrades) is reflected on her person as she changes her equipment. Lara herself has many appearances that change depending on the outfit that you select. There's a painstaking amount of detail in the elaborate underground tombs, damp forests, snowy mountains, neglected soviet gulags and small villages that you wander through. I don't often find myself standing still and just looking at scenery in a game, but I couldn't help it this time. Visually, Rise of the Tomb Raider is stunning. Without giving away too much, a small disappointment is that parts of the ending seemed to be a carbon copy of the previous Tomb Raider game. What gave an interesting energy to the plot was an atmosphere of impending war and a large group of people who were fighting for the same cause as Lara. Overall, I found the story more interesting than previous installments and thankfully less gruesome (there's no wading through pools of blood surrounded by skulls in this one). She makes a friend in a derelict Siberian prison camp and goes on to assist his people that happen to have the same enemy as her. Joined with her good friend Jonah (also from 2013's Tomb Raider), Lara is chased by a group known as Trinity and their leader Konstantin. She is on the hunt for an artifact called the Divine Source which is said to bring eternal life. Rise of the Tomb Raider takes our heroin Lara Croft through a short stint in Syria and then on to the bulk of the adventure in the snowy mountains of Siberia. □ If there's one thing Lara loves, it's fiddling with ancient contraptions │ Like you, Video Chums despises clickbait so you won't find any divisive content or articles that fuel the console wars here. Now that she's exploring tombs again, it's time to grab my dual pistols, slip into my cargo shorts and let the raiding begin! I was smitten with Lara's adventures ever since I played Tomb Raider III and I've anticipated every sequel since. Rise of the Tomb Raider is also available for PS4 / PSVR and Xbox 360 Part of that gathering and collecting is also killing animals for their hides and parts, so if you're not ready to shoot bunnies and deer with a bow and arrow, better prepare yourself.Reviewed by Mary Billington playing an Xbox One on January 17, 2016 Nevertheless, there's plenty to gather and craft in Rise of the Tomb Raider. It's no secret the notion of crafting has become an overused mechanic in many modern games, but I think the key to making it interesting is adding a wildcard that forces the player to think about crafting in a way he or she hadn't considered before. It's something I recommend trying out, although you're likely to unlock a skill that makes notable items glow automatically.īecause there are so many collectible resources that facilitate healing, weapon upgrades and ammo crafting, after a while the monotony of it all starts to feel like a silly chore. Luckily, you do have the option to turn that off if you want to figure all of the puzzles and resource locations yourself. In my first five hours of play I started to feel like I had an unfair advantage because everything I needed to pay attention to was highlighted yellow whenever I used Lara's special vision mode. ![]() Gunplay is generously in Lara's favor, and each scenario provides you with a handful of overly convenient ways to use the environment to your advantage. If there's anything to lament, it's that occasionally the game feels too easy when played on normal difficulty. Rise's areas are multi-tiered and labyrinthine, which satisfyingly reward you as you play through and unlock new items and abilities. This speaks to the great overall level design of the game. And sometimes, part of the fun is discovering their camouflaged entrances. ![]() Thankfully, there are plenty of tombs to best in Rise. I found the last Tomb Raider much less focused on the explorational moments I came to adore in traditional titles in the series, but Rise of the Tomb Raider honors that legacy. Using a set of stealth melee attacks, a pick-axe, bow and a small ballistic arsenal, Lara must keep her head on a swivel at all times, not to mention deal with the perpetually collapsing ancient ruins all around her. Set a year after the events of Tomb Raider, Lara Croft is chasing down a mystical entity being aggressively pursued by an evil "let's-kill-Lara-on-sight" bunch of bad guys that go by Trinity. ![]()
